Patient Hygiene

Some patients cannot leave their bed space, in these circumstances bed sores or bacteria can develop on their skin. The importance of cleanliness in the hospital setting is crucial for prevention of hospital acquired infections.

General standard of care is to use soap and water, however if the patient has been in hospital for a while the bacteria may start to become resistant to the standard regime. This leads to a higher risk of infection, which in turn then spreads. It also increases the risk of variation of care from carer to carer, this also increases the risk of infection. By using pre-packaged bathing solutions you reduce the risk of variation simply because you have to follow the bathing protocol on the packaging!

If you would like to use pre-packaged bathing solutions, which one is correct for you? The body has a pH level of between 7 - 7.5 so it is slightly alkaline, so using a pH neutral product is essential so as not to irritate the skin. Preferably you want products that have added emollients due to the health benefits for the skin. A product that has both these key features is generally best clinical practice!
